November 12th 2004.

A Dive Master who was caught rolling a “joint” (hand-rolled marijuana cigarette) during the popular “Sunday School” fete at Buccoo early on Monday, was ordered to pay a fine of $1,000 or serve four months in prison with hard labour, by Magistrate Halcyon Yorke-Young, when he appeared in the Scarborough Second Court later that day.

“Boss, you catch me,” Armstrong Cupid reportedly told Constable Romeo, of the Old Grange Police Station, when he was cornered by Romeo around 1 am on Monday, the court was told.

The court heard from Prosecutor, Sergeant Jeffrey George that Constable Romeo, dressed in plain clothes was on foot-patrol duty in the Buccoo area at that time, when he observed Cupid ‘rolling’ an unusual hand-rolled cigarette.

Romeo approached Cupid, told him of his observations, having identified himself as a policeman, and seized the “joint” of marijuana, which amounted to .2 gramme, the court was told.

Cupid told the court that he had carried along a quantity of marijuana when he took some people, whom he described as “a headache”, on a dive earlier on Sunday.

Cupid told Magistrate Yorke-Young: “I am a Dive Master; the people were a headache. It was used to cure my headache. I took it out on the dive, and when I checked my pocket I realised I had that left back, so I decided to roll it and get rid of it, but the officers were looking at me more than I was looking at them.”

“Next time you have a headache or miserable customers, stay home; let somebody else dive,” the Magistrate declared, as she imposed the $1,000 fine on Cupid.

He must pay the sum on or before November 22, or serve four months imprisonment with hard labour.
