Medical marijuana users to protest new pot regulations

OTTAWA – Medical marijuana users will be blowing off some steam in Ottawa today over restrictions on growing pot.

Cannabis activists will hold a news conference and rally on Parliament Hill to protest the government’s new Marijuana for Medical Purposes regulations.

The event comes a day after the Harper government said it would fight an injunction that allows people to continue to grow medical marijuana while a legal challenge plays out in the courts.\

Last month, Federal Court Judge Michael Manson granted the temporary injunction, allowing medical marijuana patients currently licensed to continue to grow their own marijuana.

Activists have launched a constitutional challenge after the government imposed new regulations, which take effect today, preventing people from growing their own marijuana at home and requiring them to buy from commercial producers.

WATCH: Alison Myrden suffers from Chronic Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. She wrote this open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper outlining how medical cannabis use has improved her quality of life.
