11th Cannabis Convention

The UVSS Hempology 101 Club and the International Hempology 101 Society will be hosting its 11th Annual Cannabis Convention Sunday February 28, 2010 at the University of Victoria. A large crowd is expected to gather to watch an event that will feature some of the most influential cannabis activists of the west coast. The event will be held at the University of Victoria from 1:00 to 4:00pm in the David Strong Building’s Auditorium. Admission is free.
Prominent speakers include Joanne McKee – Seattle, Jodie Emery – Vancouver, Kirk Tousaw-Victoria, as well as Tony Smith from Law Enforcement Against Prohibition. Bill Finnley from Hemp and Company and Jeff Tek from Treating Yourself Magazine will also be presenting.
Joanne McKee was instrumental in establishing medical cannabis in Washington State, where is became legal in 1995. She has since been continuing her involvement in seeing that patients have proper access to these programs. She has been an advocate and spokesperson for the Seattle Green Cross from it’s founding in 1993.
Tony Smith joined the Vancouver Police Force in 1973. He was soon assigned to the Car 86 program, in which officers collaborated with social workers to aid families in need of intervention. Here he noted that the one factor wherever violence or extreme hostile behaviour was displayed was not illegal drugs, but alcohol. Based on his 28 years of service, Tony’s greatest concern is the enormous amount of money pouring into criminal organizations via prohibitionism.

Kirk Tousaw is barrister and social justice advocate based in Vancouver, BC. He has written and spoken extensively on issues related to drug policy, privacy, religious freedom and criminal justice policy. In addition, Kirk has had the privilege of testifying several times before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights of the House of Commons and also before the Senate Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs.
Jodie Emery has run for the federal Green Party in Vancouver, held position of Assistant Editor of Cannabis Culture, one of the widest circulated cannabis magazines, and married the ‘Prince of Pot’ in 2006. Bill Finley has been the proprietor of Hemp&Co. for 10 years now. He attributes the steady growth to a raised awareness, a social acceptance of environmental issues and the Canadian government’s approval of a long misunderstood agricultural crop. “We manufacture our own clothes using hemp and organic cotton blends and we manufacture in Vancouver, Canada.” Jeff Tek is a medical grower and writer and editor of Treating Yourself Magazine.
The International Hempology 101 Society has been advocating for sensible cannabis regulations through education and community events for the last 14 years. The focus is on hemp, marijuana and prohibition.
The UVSS Hempology 101 Club, a student run club, is the largest on campus with upwards of 420 members and host a 420 every week throughout the school year. They teach a free weekly non-credit lecture series which offers a “Certificate of Completion” to any student or community member who attends all the classes. The lectures cover a broad range of subjects from the history and uses of hemp, law, medical cannabis products and the impact of prohibition.
