Fire destroyed a two-room marijuana growing operation in the attic of an old home in Hammond on Saturday.

Charges are not expected against the two people who live in the house, police said.

The Maple Ridge fire department was called to the house at 20582 Lorne Avenue at around 6:50 a.m.

Assistant fire chief Brett Morris said the fire started in a small room in the attic where electrical lines entered the house. It was contained to that room and another larger one, which housed the grow-op.

Initial indications suggest the cause of the fire was electrical, Morris said.

RCMP Cpl. Bernie Smandych said the medium-sized grow-op had recently been harvested. However, she added, not enough evidence was salvaged from the fire to proceed with charges against the two occupants.

Neither was injured in the fire.
